What Is a Dental Crown?

The crown of your tooth is the visible part of your tooth that shows above the gum line. If the natural crown is decayed or damaged, we place a custom-made dental crown over the damaged tooth. Once the dental crown is cemented in place, it covers the entire tooth and looks natural.

Dental crowns support the structure of the remaining tooth and restore proper function of the mouth and jaw. A tooth crown can protect the root of a tooth after a root canal procedure.

Fabricated crowns have the feel and appearance of a natural tooth. Dental crowns are custom-designed in shape and color to match your existing teeth. Crowns come in a variety of materials including gold, porcelain/ceramic, zirconia, or hybrid materials. Material choice will vary depending on many different factors. Dr. Ngo and his team can help you decide which material will work best in a particular tooth.

The Benefits of Tooth Crowns

Dental crowns improve the appearance and function of your teeth and mouth and prevent your teeth and gums from deteriorating. Tooth decay, if left untreated, can lead to teeth removal and more severe dental procedures. A tooth crown procedure is far less invasive than a dental bridge and less expensive than dental implants.

The Crown Installation Procedure

Dr. Ngo at Pacific Street Dental always consults with you before starting any dental procedures. First, we complete a comprehensive series of x-rays to evaluate your oral health. Dr. Ngo prepares to fit the crown by disinfecting and reshaping what remains of the affected tooth.

Our team then makes a dental impression which we send to a special lab that crafts the dental crown. That process takes an average of three weeks. Dr. Ngo may cover the tooth with a temporary crown to protect it until your next appointment.

Once your new crown comes back from the lab, Dr. Ngo removes the temporary crown and secures the permanent crown in place. This procedure is usually painless, but we can offer a local anesthetic should you require it.

CEREC Same-Day Crowns

We know that when you need a crown, dealing with a temporary and hoping the laboratory makes the crown perfect the first time can be frustrating.  Here at Pacific Street Dental, we have the option of utilizing CAD/CAM technology to make your crown the same day – avoiding the need for a temporary and knowing the crown is being designed by the people who know what the actual tooth looks like.

The use of technology aids many current dental procedures. In addition, this advanced technology makes same-day dental corrections easy.

  • CAD/CAM dentistry: computer-aided design, computer-aided manufacturing technology can be used for your dentist to make dental procedures more efficient and more accurate. This technology can be used to make a perfectly fitting crown all in one day.
  • CAD/CAM Crowns: This technology allows your dentist to prepare the tooth, take an impression, and create the crown in one visit.
  • CEREC: The crowns made using Cerec technology can be a variety of different materials for a customized fit and look while being designed right in front of you.
